How scientists can become compelling media interviewees

Chris Jameson of Inside Edge – the ESRC’s media training company – has extensive experience as a senior BBC network producer and reporter. For ten years he worked at BBC Radio 5 Live on a range of programmes and as a reporter based in Japan. He has produced several major set-piece broadcasts for the network and his programmes have won several Sony Radio Awards.

A confession from a radio news producer. Ten years ago the voice of the audience in the programme-making process was virtually silent. We’d get the occasional letter with feedback on a long forgotten segment, and the odd phone call, but that was about it. Gauging how listeners genuinely felt about an interview or guest was nothing more than educated guess work.
